Revenue and Revelry: How House Committees Spend on Student Entertainment

By Hiral M. Chavre and Darcy G Lin

Harvard’s House Committees (HoCos) manage student entertainment budgets with wide variation in spending, event scale, and resident satisfaction, especially around House formals like Eliot’s exclusive Fête and Lowell’s extravagant Bacchanalia. Despite a standard grant from the Dean of Students Office, additional revenue sources like ticket sales, merchandise, and grants create discrepancies. Some Houses use off-campus venues, while others like Adams and Eliot repurpose dining halls. Student impressions highlight the role of House spirit, HoCo creativity, and equitable access over pure budget size in defining social success.

Darcy G Lin

With different budgets, revenue streams, and degrees of extravagance, resident satisfaction with House social calendars varies across the River and Quad. The Crimson spoke with HoCo chairs from all 12 upperclassmen Houses about how they prioritize spending to bring House traditions to life.

Measuring a life well lived

The Global Flourishing Study (GFS), led by Harvard’s Tyler VanderWeele, is one of the largest efforts to measure human wellbeing across multiple dimensions, including happiness, health, purpose, character, and relationships. Surveying over 200,000 people in 22 countries, the study found that wealthier nations often rank lower in overall flourishing, while middle-income countries score higher in meaning, relationships, and character. Notably, flourishing increases with age, and young people are reporting lower wellbeing globally. Religious service attendance and marriage were linked to higher flourishing scores. All GFS data is publicly available for continued research.

Editorials: Harvard’s DEI Rebrand Will Serve It Well

Harvard’s rebranding of its diversity office to “Community and Campus Life” and ending University-funded affinity graduations is seen as a strategic move to protect core DEI initiatives while avoiding political backlash. The Crimson Editorial Board argues this is not capitulation to the Trump administration, but a defensive strategy amid legal battles and public criticism. By shedding the controversial DEI label, Harvard preserves support for uncontroversial programs like pre-orientation for first-gen students and inclusive medical materials, while promoting transparency and reducing litigation risk.

Editorials Dissent: Harvard Shouldn’t Sacrifice Values for Optics

A group of Crimson Opinion Writers dissent from the Editorial Board’s endorsement of Harvard’s DEI office rebranding, arguing that renaming the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging to “Community and Campus Life” is a retreat from Harvard’s core values. They contend the change was not necessary for public support, citing favorable polling on DEI, and that it miscommunicates Harvard’s stance amid misinformation-fueled attacks from figures like Trump. They argue that the rebrand weakens moral clarity, obscures the office’s function, and fails to address the structural inequities DEI aims to combat.

Columns: An Endowment Tax Is Worse Than You Think

In this column, Julien Berman argues that proposed increases to the endowment tax—including a 35% rate backed by JD Vance—would devastate Harvard’s finances, reducing the net present value of its endowment by up to $18 billion, or nearly 40%. He explains that Harvard’s endowment functions as a stream of annual cash disbursements supporting research, salaries, and financial aid, and that such taxes would have a far greater long-term impact than even the current $2.2 billion federal funding freeze. He contends that Harvard, unlike corporations, exists to spend for public good, not to profit, and thus should not be taxed similarly.

Reading Period Affirmations

In her humorous and relatable column,  Gabi C. Tien offers a series of reading period affirmations to help Harvard students survive the stress of final exams. She highlights the chaos of library marathons, reliance on ChatGPT, and the importance of small wins, reminding students that “the work always gets done” and to prioritize mental health. With affirmations like “Chat and I are locked in” and “Life is worth living,” she encourages balance, optimism, and self-care during one of the most grueling academic weeks of the year.

Ok, we all say this, but if you think about it, it’s true.

NYTimes: Harvard’s Trick for Fighting Trump? A Deep Bench of Conservative Lawyers.

To bolster its lawsuit against the Trump administration over federal funding cuts, Harvard has assembled a legal team that includes conservative-aligned lawyers—many of whom previously clerked for Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices or advised the Trump Organization. This strategic move, modeled after past legal battles like Michigan’s affirmative action case, aims to appeal to a right-leaning Supreme Court while reinforcing arguments around academic freedom and the Administrative Procedure Act. Though risky, the approach signals Harvard’s intent to fight Trump’s demands with a bipartisan legal front.

Boston Globe Editorial: If Harvard wants a tolerant campus, it needs to admit tolerant students

In response to two major reports on antisemitism and anti-Palestinian bias, Harvard must go beyond bureaucratic reforms and focus on fostering a tolerant campus culture by carefully considering empathy and civility in admissions, hiring, and discipline. The editorial argues that universities like Harvard should prioritize applicants and faculty who demonstrate respectful dialogue, and consistently enforce clear behavioral standards to curb bullying, harassment, and hostility rooted in political or identity differences, especially during heightened conflicts like the Israel-Gaza war.

MSN: Trump administration targets Harvard Law Review with race-based discrimination investigation

The Trump administration has launched a civil rights investigation into Harvard University and the Harvard Law Review, alleging race-based discrimination in article and membership selection. Triggered by a report from the Washington Free Beacon, the probe claims the Law Review prioritizes racial and identity-based criteria over merit, potentially violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. The investigation escalates tensions between Harvard and the Trump administration, which already froze $2.2 billion in federal funding and demanded the dismantling of DEI programs and ideological screening of international students.

The Times of India: Who is Ethan Shaotran? DOGE member who dropped out of Harvard to Serve his country, says 'most compus hates me now'

Ethan Shaotran, a 22-year-old former Harvard student and AI researcher, left the university to join DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), a federal tech reform initiative led by Elon Musk under the Trump administration. As part of a select group of young engineers embedded in agencies like OPM and GSA, Shaotran now works on modernizing federal systems, often facing backlash—he noted that “most of campus hates me now.” Previously, Shaotran co-founded Energize AI, received a $100K OpenAI grant, and published IEEE-recognized research on autonomous systems. His move reflects the rising influence of tech-savvy youth in federal governance.

Avoiding injury when you're on grandkid duty

Older adults caring for grandchildren face a heightened risk of injury due to sudden physical demands like lifting squirmy kids, chasing them, or getting up and down frequently. Harvard experts recommend strength training for the core, legs, and shoulders, using proper lifting techniques, and practicing balance exercises to prevent falls and muscle strain. Techniques like the “sit-to-stand” drill and modified floor transitions can improve mobility. Maintaining strength and stability is key not only to avoid interruptions in childcare but also to protect long-term health and safety.

Unpredictable bursts of activity can set you up for falls, injuries, and a risky interruption in child care.

Treating high blood pressure may help lower risk of cognitive decline

Treating high blood pressure more aggressively may reduce the risk of cognitive decline, according to a 2025 study in Neurology. Researchers analyzed data from the SPRINT trial, which compared intensive treatment (targeting systolic BP <120 mm Hg) to standard treatment (targeting <140 mm Hg) in 9,361 adults over 50. After seven years, the intensive group had an 11% lower risk of mild cognitive impairment, suggesting that tight blood pressure control not only helps prevent cardiovascular disease but may also protect brain health.

Research highlights health benefits from cold-water immersions

Researchers analyzed the results from 11 studies involving 3,177 people. For most, cold-water exposure involved sitting in an ice bath at or above chest level. (One study used cold showers.) Water temperatures ranged from 45° to 59° F. Exposure time varied from 30 seconds to 15 minutes. (One study included durations from 10 minutes to two hours, and another included intervals of one minute in cold water and one minute out, repeated seven times.) Immersions were done multiple days a week for several weeks.
