Harvard FAS Professors Told To Prepare Contingency Plans for Budget Shortfalls

Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) has directed professors and departments to draft contingency plans for potential budget shortfalls, including scenarios involving up to 20% cuts and downsizing office space, in response to the Trump administration’s freeze and disqualification of federal funding, totaling nearly $2.7 billion. FAS Dean Hopi E. Hoekstra warned that recent federal actions have initiated long-term changes in funding, and the school has already paused hiring and non-essential spending. New task forces and a revived Resources Committee will guide FAS through what Hoekstra called one of the most profound crises in Harvard’s history.

Harvard amends lawsuit to push back against new funding cuts

Harvard University has amended its lawsuit against the Trump administration to contest an additional $450 million in federal grant cuts, adding to the original $2.2 billion already frozen. The University accuses the government of attempting to “micromanage” its governance, hiring, and academic freedom, violating First Amendment rights and bypassing federal civil rights procedures. In a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, President Alan Garber emphasized shared goals like fighting antisemitism, but rejected ideological coercion. Harvard warns that the funding loss jeopardizes critical research in health, science, and national security.

Harvard Asks to Name 2 More Agencies, Include New Funding Cuts in Lawsuit Against Trump Admin

Harvard University filed an amended lawsuit on Tuesday to include two additional federal agencies — the USDA and HUD — and newly announced funding cuts totaling over $2.6 billion in its legal battle against the Trump administration. The revised complaint argues these actions are retaliatory and violate Harvard’s First Amendment rights and federal procedures, particularly for bypassing Title VI protocols. The University cited a coordinated campaign by at least seven federal agencies to terminate grants without due process, alleging the moves were politically motivated and lacked any connection to actual legal violations. A hearing is scheduled for July 21.

What new grads get wrong about the job search, says Harvard-trained career expert

Harvard-trained career expert Suzy Welch argues that new grads often rush into jobs without first understanding their values, strengths, and purpose, leading to mismatched careers. Welch, who teaches a course on purpose at NYU Stern, urges students to identify their "area of transcendence"—where passion, talent, and financial security align—before job hunting. She warns against blindly joining popular fields like finance, tech, or consulting, noting that those who don’t pursue authentic paths often burn out by age 40. Her message: know yourself first, then find the work that fits.

Boston Globe: Harvard defeats tyranny. (At least, it did 250 years ago.)

In a historically resonant moment, Harvard University’s legal and ideological confrontation with the Trump administration echoes its revolutionary past. As the U.S. marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, Harvard’s defense of academic freedom, due process, and institutional autonomy recalls its patriot roots, when its students joined the Minutemen and its buildings housed Continental Army barracks. The university’s current resistance to federal overreach—especially around research funding and ideological audits—parallels its 18th-century stand against royal tyranny. The piece frames Harvard as a symbol of enduring knowledge, civic resilience, and constitutional liberty.

Harvard University has expanded its lawsuit against the Trump administration, now challenging $2.6 billion in frozen or revoked federal research funding. The updated complaint follows Education Secretary Linda McMahon’s announcement of an additional $450 million cut and threats to bar future grants. Harvard accuses the government of First Amendment violations, administrative overreach, and retaliation for noncompliance with demands to alter its admissions, hiring, and DEI programs. Despite Harvard’s diplomatic overtures, including a letter from President Alan Garber, the University is asking the court to restore its funding and block further cuts.
