The President's comments came as he received a report from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies on industrialisation, energy security, and climate change. The report's findings and recommendations will be integrated into ongoing policies and programmes within the Renewed Hope Agenda. Tinubu's statement follows a recent report outlining the poor conditions in public universities and issues with the Federal Government’s payroll system, which has led to an exodus of professionals, including 2,000 doctors leaving the country in two years.

Nigeria, China sign pact on construction $150m battery plant

The Federal Ministry of Power of Nigeria and the China Ministry of Ecology and Environment have overseen the signing of an agreement for a $150m lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Nigeria. The agreement was signed with the SHENZEN LEMI Technology Development Company at the United Nations Climate Conference. The factory is backed by a $150m investment from LEMI, with operations expected to begin from the second quarter of 2024. The facility is expected to facilitate the development and transfer of climate technology, promote local industrialisation, and contribute to job creation and economic growth. The project aligns with Nigeria's goals of universal electricity access by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2060.

We’ll do everything to actualise vision for boundaries management – Shettima

The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, has pledged the administration's commitment to realizing government's vision in managing various boundaries in the country. Shettima, who is also Chairman of the National Boundary Commission's Board, thanked the commission for working to preserve the country's territorial integrity and maintaining peace and security. He acknowledged the challenges associated with boundary management and encouraged the staff not to relent in resolving boundary disputes. He stressed the need to urgently constitute a new board for the Commission, urging stakeholders to be sensitive about the nomination of persons from various sub-regions. The Commission's Director General, Adamu Adaji, reiterated the Commission's resolve to maintain Nigeria's territorial integrity and promote peace and security. He highlighted the ongoing work at the Nigeria-Cameroon International front and the progress on the Nigeria-Niger International boundary. Despite challenges, the Commission has demarcated about 30 interstate boundaries, some of which have been completed.

FG begins enforcement of disability act next year

The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) in Nigeria will begin enforcing the Disability Rights Act from January 2024. The NCPWD's Executive Secretary, James Lalu, announced that a task force will be established to ensure full enforcement of the act's provisions, aimed at eradicating discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of their physical or mental abilities. The Disability Rights Act, passed in January 2019, has not been fully enforced until now. It prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in sectors such as education, employment, healthcare, and public transportation. The Federal Government is committed to promoting inclusivity, equal access, and social justice for persons with disabilities. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, emphasized that the full implementation and enforcement of the Disability Act is a collective responsibility of all Nigerians and called for its domestication in all states.

He assured civil society organisations and international agencies of robust engagement in the committee’s work and stated the committee would monitor and evaluate all efforts to eradicate corruption. Akiolu also mentioned plans to initiate international exchange programmes and conferences for knowledge sharing on global best practices in the fight against corruption.

The Nigerian Consulate in Buea, the Coalition of the Willing (COW), and Lawyers All Africa for Africans have held a training session on the rule of law for Nigerians living in Cameroon. The training aimed to educate the Nigerian community about their rights and to promote a harmonious living between the two nationalities. The workshop was an opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting foreigners and living together. The President of COW, Barrister John Kameni, emphasized that Nigerians in Cameroon must know their rights, be protected by Cameroonian laws, and participate in peace-building. After the training, participants were encouraged to regularise their legal status in Cameroon and to remain law-abiding.

IPC mulls training of 1,000 fact-checkers before 2027 elections

The International Press Centre (IPC -Nigeria) plans to recruit and train 1,000 fact-checkers across Nigeria's 36 states before the 2027 general elections. This initiative is part of the iVerify Nigeria Platform, a tech-savvy fact-checking tool overseen by senior journalists, which was unveiled in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The platform is designed to combat misinformation and promote information integrity around election and governance processes. The UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Lealem Dinku, stressed the need to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which can hinder citizens' ability to make informed decisions and can incite violence. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission also urged Nigerians to halt the spread of fake news.

Lagos tasks schools on health policy

The Lagos State Government has urged schools to implement comprehensive health policies, including regular medical screenings for students and teachers, to mitigate the risk of emergencies. The policy would also assist schools in maintaining medical records for necessary treatment in crisis situations. The advice came from Remi Abdul of the Lagos state Ministry of Education during a health seminar organised by Ago Medical Centre in collaboration with Grandmates School. Abdul emphasized the importance of schools conducting medical tests on students before they participate in sports and having a standby ambulance during inter-house sports events. He also suggested that schools should conduct medical screening on individuals selling food and other consumables, as students with unknown medical issues may perform poorly in exams. The seminar also discussed the high cases of diphtheria in Northern parts of the country, attributing it to low levels of immunisation.

On Titilola Adeleke’s many silent wins

Chief (Mrs.) Titilola Adeleke, wife of the Governor of Osun State, Ademola Jackson Adeleke, has been recognized for her quiet contributions to society. A trained sociologist, Adeleke has been a key figure in advancing primary health, childbirth, and women's empowerment, often without public recognition. Her philanthropic efforts were publicly acknowledged when she was named the 2023 Net Ambassador by the State Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, Development Partners, Society for Family Health, and Catholic Relief Service. Adeleke also recently led a walk against violence towards women and children in Osun State, part of a 16-day activism campaign. Furthermore, she has been appointed as the Grand Matron of Osun Babes football club and represented Osun at the fourth Annual Conference of the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum in Abuja.

Ekiti hospital plans 80% allocation for medical equipment

This move is part of an effort to expand the scope of the hospital's services, including linking all Electronic Medical Records to achieve 100% paperless clinical practice. The CMD also discussed the hospital's challenges, such as high power costs, inadequate water supply, poor access roads, ecological issues, uncertain manpower planning, and the need to upgrade medical facilities, with the House of Representatives Committee on Health. The committee has expressed commitment to helping the hospital address these issues.

Don’t leave Nigeria, Tinubu urges multinationals

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has reassured multinationals of his administration's commitment to remove any obstacles that hinder the smooth running of their businesses in the country. This comes after several multinational companies wound down operations in Nigeria in the past months. Tinubu expressed confidence in potential increased investment from Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria. Shell's Global Integrated Gas and Upstream Director, Ms. Zoe Yujnovich, confirmed the company's plan to maintain its investment in Nigeria, pledging $1bn over the next decade to enhance the domestic gas value chain and support the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas project, as well as a $5bn investment in the Bonga North project.

Sanwo-Olu: We won’t allow disruption of business in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured the business community that his administration will not allow disruption of businesses in the state. He gave this assurance during the 2023 Lagos Corporate Assembly, a business forum. Sanwo-Olu also emphasized the need for government agencies to work closely with corporate organizations and SMEs for the improvement of the state's economy. He disclosed that Lagos State requires about N7 trillion to meet infrastructural and basic amenities needs in 2024, despite the proposed N2 trillion budget for the same year. The Governor also urged for the creation of friendly policies to allow MSMEs to thrive for a sustainable economy.

Geregu Power targets N5.56bn profit in Q1 2024

Geregu Power Plc, an indigenous power firm listed on the Nigerian Exchange Limited, has projected a profit of N5.56 billion for the first quarter of 2024. Despite an expected cash flow from operation of N590 million, the company expects its operating cash flow before working capital changes to settle at N9.79 billion. The company's revenue is anticipated to reach N31.242 billion, offset by costs of sales of N16.759 billion. The estimated gross profit is N14.482 billion, with administrative expenses expected to be N5.4 billion. The company also expects net finance costs of N800 million and a tax provision of N2.4 billion. The company's shares were traded at a value of N39.73 million recently.

High inflation raises social risks in Nigeria — Moody

The global rating agency, Moody's, has updated its outlook of Nigeria from stable to positive, citing recent reform efforts that may reverse the country's deteriorating fiscal and external position. However, the agency affirmed the country's Caa1 rating, reflecting its weak fiscal and external position. Moody's noted that Nigeria's high inflation is putting pressure on government spending and increasing social risks. The agency also stated that the removal of oil subsidies, unification of foreign exchange windows, and devaluation of the naira could improve the country's fiscal and external conditions, thereby boosting its credit profile. According to Moody's, these reforms could help attract foreign investment, support the country's balance of payments, and alleviate the government's budget deficit. However, they also noted that policy coordination to fight inflation and maintain stability is hindered by institutional constraints, including lack of reliable data.

Kogi livestock farmers to benefit from $500m World Bank fund

The World Bank is set to invest $500m in a project aimed at empowering livestock farmers in Kogi State, Nigeria. The project, coordinated by Dr Olufemi Bolarin, will benefit 30,000 farmers, with a focus on commercialising livestock production. It will directly aid 21,000 farmers and 9,000 women. The project is also set to address the recurrent clashes between farmers and herders, with a $40m investment to establish ranches of various sizes. To qualify, beneficiaries must already own livestock. The project is expected to last six years.

Nigeria takes major step towards once again producing refined oil

The delivery of a million barrels of crude oil to a new refinery in Nigeria is a significant step towards the country's ability to produce fuel. The oil-rich nation has been importing refined oil, creating additional costs. The Dangote refinery, once operational, is expected to be a major step towards energy self-sufficiency. After the initial delivery, five million more barrels of crude will be delivered to allow the plant to begin fuel production. The $19bn facility could produce about 650,000 barrels per day when fully operational. Dangote Group's President Aliko Dangote said the goal is to ramp up the refinery to its full capacity. The company aims to provide for 100% of Nigeria's refined product requirements and have surplus for export. However, the country has faced challenges in fuel supply, including foreign currency shortages and increased fuel prices due to the removal of a government subsidy.

Nigerian Breweries chairman resigns, firm names replacement

Nigerian Breweries Plc has announced changes to its board of directors with the resignation of its chairman, Mr Asue Ighodalo, who plans to offer himself for public service. His resignation will take effect on 31 December 2023. The company's secretary, Mr Uaboi Agbebaku, announced that Sijbe Hiemstra, the longest-serving director, will take over as interim chairman from 1 January 2024 until a permanent chairman is appointed. The company also announced the end of Ndidi Nwuneli's tenure as an independent non-executive director, and the appointment of Stella Ojekwe-Onyejeli as a Non-Executive Director from 1 January 2023. Stella Ojekwe-Onyejeli is a skilled risk manager with experience in the financial services industry.

Ogun disburses N50m to boost agriculture

The Ogun State Government has disbursed N50m to the Ijebu Development Initiative on Poverty Reduction (IDIPR) for agriculture and fish sub-sector development. The fund, presented by Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Bolu Owotomo, is intended for an 18-month tenure with a 6-month moratorium period at a 9% per annum interest rate. Since 2012, the government has disbursed a total of N110m to IDIPR, which has been repaid duly. The government, led by Dapo Abiodun, has also implemented agricultural land reforms and provided incentives such as planting materials and capacity building for farmers.

The Founder and Chancellor of KolaDaisi University, Chief Kola Daisi, has revealed that the late Abiola Ajimobi, a former governor of Oyo State, played a significant role in the establishment of the university. The Chancellor gave this revelation during the foundation laying ceremony for the institution's senate building. Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Adeniyi Olatunbosun, expressed optimism that the new building will significantly enhance the growth and development of the university.

He made these comments during the Second Veritas University Digital Innovations Exhibition and 12th Convocation Lecture. He further announced that Nigeria was among 10 other African countries selected to benefit from AfDB's $20 billion Desert-to-Power initiative aimed at developing 10 GW of solar power. Additionally, AfDB has adopted Veritas University as a Centre of Excellence for Computer Coding for Employment. Dr. Adesina emphasized the potential of technology and Artificial Intelligence, and urged young people to provide creative solutions to the continent's challenges.

Tech firm donates security equipment to estate

Gems Consulting Company Limited, an IT consulting firm, has partnered with Obasa Estate management to enhance safety and environmental awareness within the estate. The company has donated security equipment including a gate, security lights, CCTV, and toilet facilities, and has also built a drainage system in the Oba Okran area of Lagos State. This is part of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The company's MD, Ademiju Aluko, highlighted the importance of making positive impacts in the society. The agreement was signed at the airline's corporate head office in Enugu. The chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, stated that the airline was attracted to Enyimba FC after the legendary Kanu Nwankwo became the Chairman of the club. Kanu Nwankwo, the chairman of Enyimba FC and former Super Eagles captain, expressed appreciation for the partnership, noting that it boosted the morale of the players.
