The Renewed Hope Agenda will address governance in the healthcare sector in Nigeria, according to Dr Salma Anas, Special Adviser to the President on Health. Speaking at a health accountability project summit, Anas encouraged Nigerians to become stakeholders in the healthcare sector which is aiming for interventions across eight strategic areas, with governance that embodies accountability and transparency being the key priority. The agenda envisages Universal Health Coverage as its primary objective with a focus on health as an investment and health-related issues among young people. According to Oluseun Onigbinde, co-founder and Director of BudgIT, it is time to decentralise the healthcare conversation to the state and geo-political zones of the country.

Nigeria needs industrialisation, education reforms, says Paul Adefarasin

The Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, has emphasised the urgent need for industrialisation and education reforms for Nigeria’s future development. Adefarasin stated that Nigeria must prioritise industrialisation to address the country's challenges, with a shift from raw material exports to processed products to promote job creation and strengthen industries. He also highlighted the importance of addressing the quality of education as it is shaping current public policy and will continue to affect future public policy. Adefarasin urged a collective vision that transcends regional, religious, and network divisions to rebuild the country. He expressed appreciation for the life and contributions of the late Akintola Williams and believes individuals of his caliber hold the key to revitalising Nigeria and should have the opportunity to participate in the political process.

Sanwo-Olu to commissioners, SA’s: cooperate with lawmakers

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged newly inaugurated commissioners and special advisers to cooperate with members of the House of Assembly in the course of their duties. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Sanwo-Olu advised the appointees to build on the successes of his administration's first term. He urged them to reach out and engage in collaboration to meet the expectations of the people of Lagos State. Thirty-seven commissioners and special advisers were installed at the ceremony. The commissioners represent various ministries, including justice, agriculture, health, and housing. The special advisers are responsible for areas including rural development, taxation and revenue, and tourism.

 Economy: US deputy treasury secretary, Adeyemo, to visit Nigeria

The United States Deputy Treasury Secretary, Wally Adeyemo, is set to visit Nigeria next week as part of efforts to strengthen economic relations between the two countries. Adeyemo's visit aligns with Nigeria's commitment to reform and revitalise its economy, and follows President Biden's pledge to deepen the US' engagement with Africa through a $50 billion investment over the next three years. The US is seeking to regain lost ground in its geopolitical competition with China and Russia for influence in Africa. During his visit, Adeyemo plans to meet with government officials, representatives from the technology, entertainment, and finance sectors, American companies operating in Nigeria, and visit local projects funded by the US government. The US views Nigeria as an opportunity due to its youthful workforce, and Adeyemo will discuss addressing corruption, safeguarding the financial system, diversifying the economy away from petroleum, and embracing renewable energy.

9,618 civil servants sit junior promotional exam

Over 9,600 civil servants of junior cadre recently participated in a computer-based Test Confirmation and Promotion Examination in Abuja. The initiative is part of ongoing reforms, encapsulated in the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan, and part of the push towards digitalisation to improve service delivery. Permanent Secretary, Career Management Office, Office in the Head of Service of the Federation, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, explained that the COMPRO (examination) was designed to test how well public servants know the service and their level of specialisation in handling assignments. The senior civil servant praised the conduct of candidates in the centres, revealing that the testing had been extended to the junior cadre for the first time.

Tinubu offers Nigeria’s assistance to Libya over flooding

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has offered Nigeria's assistance to Libya following the devastating flooding caused by Storm Daniel, which has killed around 2,000 people and left at least 5,000 missing. More than 30,000 people have been left homeless and critical infrastructure has been damaged. Tinubu commiserated with the Libyan people and pledged Nigeria's solidarity and goodwill during these difficult times. The International Organisation for Migration estimates that around 10,000 people are missing. The Derna region of Libya is the worst-affected area, with two dams and four bridges collapsing and the whole city submerged.

SWAGA gives over 15,000 households palliatives in Oyo

The South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA) has distributed palliatives to over 15,000 households in Oyo State. The national chairman of SWAGA, Sen. Dayo Adeyeye, announced that the palliatives were for everyone, not just APC members, and were intended to ease the hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy. Adeyeye thanked the people of Oyo for their support towards the emergence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and said the distribution was the first round with the aim of reaching out to between 10,000 to 15,000 households. He urged Nigerians to be patient with the government, adding that progress had already begun under Tinubu's leadership.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has urged for collaboration between states and the federal government to find solutions to the current economic challenges in Nigeria. Speaking at the 22nd edition of the National Council on Development Planning meeting, Adeleke emphasised the need for unity to enable the country to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth. He also stated that hosting the meeting provided a platform to strengthen Osun’s partnership with the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning to engage with development partners for more benefits. Meanwhile, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, called for constitutional provision for a joint planning board between state and local governments for effective planning.

Fed Govt ready to make Nigeria Africa’s aviation hub, says Keyamo

Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo has stated that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration aims to make Nigeria the aviation hub of Africa. Keyamo highlighted three particular projects in achieving this goal: developing aerotropolis, repairing facilities, and setting up an aircraft leasing company. Keyamo announced the roadmap at the seventh edition of the Aviation Africa Summit and Exhibition 2023. Furthermore, the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Agency (NCAA), Capt. Musa Nuhu, has stressed that the increasing number of unviable airports has put more stress on the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and states do not need to build an airport if it is not viable.

Firm unveils Ibadan solar power plant

British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) has launched a 1MWp DC grid-tied solar panel system at its manufacturing site in Ibadan, Nigeria. The system, which is designed to generate an average of 2,800 kWh per day and reduce carbon emissions by 450 tonnes, marks a significant step forward in the country’s sustainability journey, according to Charles Kyalo, area operations director for sub-Saharan Africa at BATN. Yarub Al-Bahrani, managing director and cluster director of West and Central Africa, added that the move was a key boost to BATN’s ambition to reduce its carbon footprint and become a benchmark for the wider industry.

Kano hails Ogun on CNG conversion

A team of engineers from Kano State has praised Ogun State government for pioneering the conversion of diesel and petrol engines to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The move will reduce the cost of transportation in the state and make living more comfortable. Speaking while inspecting some of the CNG-powered buses, Seriki said Ogun State was blazing the trail in the conversion to CNG while Kano State, which was planning to do the same, thought it wise to understudy the process. The governor’s aide said gas saves almost 40 percentage of funds that could be used for some other pressing needs while at the same time, provides a greener environment and reduces environmental pollution.

Fed Govt certifies Blue Rail safe for operation

The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT)'s Blue Line has been certified by the federal government as safe for commercial and passenger operations after a federal inspector of railways from the Federal Ministry of Transportation audited the rail infrastructure. The certification is in accordance with section 50 to 56 of the Nigerian Railway Act, 1955 and followed successful trial operations carried out on the rail. The Blue Line commenced limited passenger operations on 4th September 2023 and has carried approximately 20,000 passengers. The certification is seen as a validation of the strict supervision regime put in place during the construction of the project.

CBN to sanction forex operators for market infractions

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned that International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) will face sanctions if found to be acting in breach of its new directives. In a circular, the bank ordered IMTOs to observe rate limits of between -2.5% and +2.5% of the previous day's closing rate of the Nigerian forex market when carrying out transactions. This followed's the CBN's recent issuance of guidelines to IMTOs that enshrined terms and conditions under which they must operate, including pricing and payment modes. The regulator has accused some operators of engaging in sharp practices that breach its regulations.

The agreement includes the launch of MTN-Baze University 5G2Business, which stakeholders say will enable the institution to leverage fifth-generation technology to transform learning and administration. This includes more collaborative and specialised learning experiences with a more effective time management and faster signals network from the 5G technology. Huawei's Country Accounts Director, Joey Wu, calls the initiative the first such proactive step into the future of campus learning and interaction with the environment. The 5G deployment is expected to create more effective security video footage for real-time coverage, enabling an effective response to security threats.

Bill Gates has called on governments and the private sector to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in order to maximise its benefits and minimise risk. Speaking after attending a United States Senate ‘AI Insight Forum,’ Gates said that AI had limitless potential, but that it was important that its benefits and risks were balanced. Gates urged companies to regulate AI effectively to reflect basic human values, minimise bias, make sure the technology was spread to as many people as possible, and prevent its misuse by criminals and terrorists.

WhatsApp extends channels feature to Nigeria, others

Messaging app WhatsApp has launched its new Channels feature globally, including in Nigeria, enabling users to receive personalised updates from organisations, sports teams, artists and thought leaders. The feature is separate from private chats and isn't visible to third parties, said Facebook subsidiary Meta, which owns WhatsApp. The new tool offers an enhanced directory, featuring automatically filtered channels based on countries and separate tabs for new, popular and most active channels. WhatsApp admins can now make changes to updates for up to 30 days, and forwarded messages will include links back to their channels. Meta plans to enable anyone to create a channel in coming months.

NSE launches SMART innovation hub for research commercialisation

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has launched its Smart Innovation Hub in Abuja to improve productivity, networking and the commercialisation of members' research. The project, launched by NSE President Tasiu Gidari-Wudil, aims to empower Nigerian engineers by developing technology and commercial applications. Engineers can also take virtual offices at the hub, which offers training across areas including internet of things, AI and cybersecurity. Hub intellectual property will be aggregated and visitors given the opportunity to expand their ideas. The launch has been welcomed by Wema Bank CEO Moruf Oseni, who praised the scheme's support for digital skills training and knowledge.

 Don calls for effort to intensify modern biotechnology techniques

Professor Charles Adetunji of Edo State University, Nigeria, has called for increased use of modern biotechnology methods such as whole genome and next-generation sequencing in microbiology research and industrial production processes. Delivering the university’s 11th inaugural lecture series, Adetunji argued that identifying new human microbiomes could help prevent diseases and solve other health issues, adding that microbial biotechnology could offer safer alternatives to synthetic drugs, biocides and antibiotics. The Professor also stated that greater emphasis should be placed on sustainability, education, entrepreneurship, communication, knowledge transfer and social skills.

25- year-old Nigerian shines at New York Film Academy

Idorenyen Uko, a 25-year-old Nigerian filmmaker from Akwa Ibom State, has graduated from the New York Film Academy, Los Angeles with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.00. During her academic journey, Uko directed and produced outstanding films like “Sincerely Me” and “Error Connection”, which showcased her unique storytelling style and cinematic flair. APC Council targets 37,000 youths for scholarship

The APC Professionals' Council has revealed plans to provide scholarships for around 37,000 youths in Nigeria. The 'Renewed Hope Scholarship Scheme' will work in collaboration with the National Image Scholarship and will offer 1,000 young people from each state, including the Federal Capital Territory, the opportunity to advance their education in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. The scheme will provide free admission into public-private partnership higher institutions in Nigeria with scholarships for the length of their studies. The program aims to provide equal opportunities for young Nigerians who lack the necessary funds to advance their education and will include those between the ages of 17 and 30 who have five credit passes, including mathematics and English. Commission backs proposed minimum standard for secondary education

The National Senior Secondary School Education Commission has proposed national minimum standards that will set benchmarks for the establishment and operation of senior secondary education in Nigeria, according to the executive secretary of the commission. Speaking during a critique workshop for the southern zone on the draft document, Dr Iyela Ajayi said the new standards would significantly reposition the sector which had suffered from neglect and poor infrastructure leading to the production of poor-quality students. The workshop would share views from two similar events covering the northern zone, harmonising recommendations before sending them through to final approval from the National Council on Education.
