Southeast Asian Student Groups Host Visibility Week
Harvard’s Southeast Asian student groups hosted Southeast Asian Visibility Week from March 3-5, featuring cultural performances, film screenings, and poetry readings to celebrate and raise awareness of Southeast Asian identity on campus. Events included traditional dances, live music, games, and a reception with food from the region. Organizers, motivated by a lack of Southeast Asian representation at Harvard, hope the week fosters greater recognition and eventually leads to the creation of a Southeast Asian Center. The Harvard University Asia Center provided funding, highlighting the growing interest in Southeast Asia within the university community.

Free Speech, Punishable Conduct: As Harvard Clarifies Protest Policies, Some Lines Remain Blurred
Harvard has refined its protest policies amid growing scrutiny, but key ambiguities remain, particularly regarding the line between protected speech and punishable conduct. While Harvard has adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, its policies still focus primarily on conduct rather than speech alone, creating uncertainty over enforcement. Some students and faculty fear a chilling effect on free expression, while others argue the university has backed itself into a corner by condemning speech without enforcing clear consequences. With tensions high, both protesters and critics await clarity on how Harvard will handle future demonstrations.

Harvard Task Forces On Antisemitism, Islamophobia Stall On Issuing Final Recommendations
Harvard’s task forces on antisemitism and Islamophobia have missed their fall 2024 deadlines for final recommendations, drawing criticism from observers, including former President Lawrence H. Summers. While the University has implemented some preliminary recommendations—such as offering kosher meals and standardizing disciplinary procedures—the final reports remain delayed, with co-chairs citing the complexity of their investigations. Some critics, including House Republicans, argue that previous recommendations were too weak, failing to address demands like limiting masked protests or reviewing academic programs for antisemitic content. It remains unclear whether the final reports will push Harvard to take further action.

Nancy Mace Touts Bipartisanship, Warms To Harvard Students in IOP Visit
During her visit to Harvard’s Institute of Politics, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) struck a more conciliatory tone than her combative social media posts had suggested, focusing on bipartisanship rather than attacking the university. While she had previously framed the event as a confrontation, calling Harvard students “blue-haired Pro-Hamas kids,” attendees said she emphasized her bipartisan track record and engaged in a polite discussion. Topics like immigration, antisemitism, and transgender rights were raised, but without the antagonism she displayed in prior statements. The event concluded without protests, and some attendees valued the dialogue.

Op Eds: Why Harvard Has So Few Conservative Faculty – Or Does It?
By Mathias Risse. Mathias Risse is Berthold Beitz Professor in Human Rights, Global Affairs and Philosophy and Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy.
Professor Mathias Risse argues that while Harvard may not have many traditional Equality Denier conservatives—those who believe in inherent group hierarchies—there are plenty of Equality Qualifiers, who accept inequality in economic and social spheres, and Status Seekers, who uphold elite structures. He contends that Harvard's perceived progressive tilt is exaggerated, as discussions about economic inequality, gender, and citizenship still reflect conservative perspectives. Risse rejects calls for affirmative action for conservatives, instead emphasizing the need to challenge Equality Deniers, particularly in political leadership.
Op Eds: Neither Silence nor Compliance Will Save Harvard From Trump. Resistance Might.
Professors Vincent A. Brown and Walter Johnson argue that Harvard’s passive response to political attacks and right-wing pressure will not protect it from the Trump administration’s broader assault on diversity, equity, and inclusion. They contend that “woke ideology” is a fabricated distraction, while systemic racial, economic, and gender injustices persist. The authors call for active resistance, urging Harvard to defend vulnerable faculty and students rather than appease critics. They highlight the American Association of University Professors’ (AAUP) recent legal challenge to Trump’s executive orders as an example of effective pushback and demand Harvard take a stronger stance.
Flyby: Midterms: Humanities Edition
Stephany Gutierrez humorously compares humanities and STEM midterm experiences, lamenting the lack of open-note exams, curved grades, and multiple test rounds for her field. While STEM students endure relentless exams, she faces dense readings, never-ending essays, and last-minute cramming. She envies the structure of STEM midterms but acknowledges the unique suffering of writing multiple 15-page papers in a short window. Ultimately, she reminds students—regardless of their academic path—that they willingly chose their struggles and should maybe reconsider their choices next semester.
