Ex-Harvard Chemist Charles Lieber Joins Chinese University

By William C. Mao and Veronica H. Paulus

Former Harvard chemist Charles Lieber, previously convicted in the U.S. for concealing ties to China’s Thousand Talents Program, has begun a new role at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, holding its highest faculty rank. Lieber’s move follows a 2023 sentencing and reflects China’s push to bolster scientific innovation. Despite controversy over his prosecution—part of the U.S. China Initiative, later shut down for racial profiling concerns—Lieber remains a respected figure in nanotechnology. His appointment sparked attention as a symbol of ongoing geopolitical tensions in science and academia.

Veronica H. Paulus

On Harvard’s 2024 Pulse Survey, Jewish and Muslim Students Report Feeling Like They Don’t Belong

Harvard’s 2024 Pulse Survey revealed a decline in belonging and comfort of expression among Jewish and Muslim students, with only 47.5% and 50.8% respectively feeling comfortable sharing opinions, down from 2019. MENA students and conservatives also reported the lowest comfort levels, while transgender and nonbinary students showed improved but still unequal experiences. Despite an overall increase in belonging (78%), political polarization, identity-based fear, and self-censorship remain concerns. The findings coincided with Harvard renaming its DEI office, amid pressure from the Trump administration to dismantle diversity initiatives.

In Harvard’s Directories, Transgender Students Navigate a Slow and Uneven Name Change System

By Annabel M. Yu and Sheerea X. Yu

Transgender students at Harvard continue to face systemic challenges due to persistent use of legal names across key university platforms, despite updating their preferred names in the my.harvard system. This mismatch affects ID scanners, email communications, alumni directories, and employer outreach, often leading to students being misgendered and misnamed. Though some areas, like dining halls, have implemented temporary fixes (e.g., covering ID screens), the slow, inconsistent updates cause distress and complicate job applications. Students and advocates stress the need for institutional reform, urging Harvard to align its systems with its stated commitment to inclusion and respect for gender identity.

Sheerea X. Yu

Editorials: The Reports Are Out — Now It’s Our Turn.

The Crimson Editorial Board urges action following the release of Harvard’s twin task force reports on antisemitism and anti-Muslim bias, which revealed that many Jewish and Muslim students feel unsafe and silenced on campus. Highlighting gaps in faculty hiring, ambiguous protest policies, and lack of institutional support during events like doxxing, the editorial calls on both Harvard’s administration and students to foster empathy, clear guidelines, and expanded academic discourse. While applauding Harvard’s initial steps, the board stresses that recognition must lead to meaningful reform.

Columns: Viewpoint Diversity and the Scientists

Harvey C. Mansfield, ’53 is the Kenan Research Professor of Government at Harvard, argues that Harvard’s lack of viewpoint diversity, particularly its overwhelming left-leaning bias, contributed to its clash with the Trump administration and threatens its independence. He highlights a deeper internal divide between scientists, who rely on government funding, and humanists, whose political stances often invite controversy. Mansfield contrasts science’s impersonal, hypothetical nature with the humanities’ focus on personal identity and timeless truths, warning that neither discipline alone can justify Harvard’s value. Instead, he calls for a renewed pursuit of wisdom (veritas) that integrates both domains to secure Harvard’s legitimacy and societal worth.

NYTimes: Trump and Harvard Both Want ‘Viewpoint Diversity.’ What Does It Mean?

The escalating conflict between Harvard and the Trump administration centers around the ambiguous demand for "viewpoint diversity", which Trump’s team seeks to audit and enforce across faculty, students, and staff. While Harvard rejects federal intervention, President Alan Garber has embraced the term, vowing reforms to promote free inquiry and academic exploration. Critics warn that viewpoint diversity is a politicized, undefined concept used to suppress speech and attack DEI programs. Internal surveys reveal student discomfort with expressing dissenting views, especially on controversial topics like Israel-Palestine, and point to ideological imbalance being used both to stifle and justify censorship.

Opinion from the Columbia Spectator: A place among its peers: Learning from the ‘Columbia lesson’ at Harvard

In a pointed critique, Ishaan Barrett compares Harvard’s defiance and Columbia’s compliance in response to Trump administration demands threatening academic freedom and billions in federal research funding. While Harvard swiftly rejected the White House’s conditions, Columbia’s earlier capitulation under then-president Katrina Armstrong is now viewed as a cautionary tale. Despite some internal concessions, Harvard has become a symbol of institutional integrity, while Columbia grapples with a self-inflicted identity crisis, struggling between self-protection and academic freedom. Barrett urges Columbia to reclaim its legacy and reject authoritarian encroachment with genuine resolve.

Rolling Stone: What, Like It’s Hard? Yes, Being a Harvard Student Has Been Difficult Lately, Thanks for Asking

In a satirical piece from The Harvard Lampoon, students mock the Trump administration’s crackdown on Harvard, which includes absurd demands to end cancer research, surveil international students, and dismantle DEI policies. The authors ridicule the government’s push for conservative curriculum, quote fake names on student lists, and parody task forces like one on anti-anti-antisemitism. Harvard leadership’s defiant stance, including President Alan Garber and Dean Rakesh Khurana, is lampooned alongside ICE infiltration, “Crimson-Out Tuesday,” and Trump’s mistaken “butt text.” Through humor, the piece underscores tensions over academic freedom, identity politics, and authoritarian overreach.
