When tariffs are levied against a specific country, that country might attempt to circumvent the tariff by rerouting products through a third country to avoid the higher taxes. Research in the aftermath of the 2018 U.S.-China trade war examined this phenomenon and found that while tariff circumvention through Vietnam did happen, it wasn’t as widespread as many had initially thought. That said, there still was an increase in tariff circumvention more broadly—specifically via Chinese-owned firms in Vietnam. The findings suggest that if a country is considering implementing tariffs, a better approach might involve ownership-based duties or firm-specific sanctions instead of blanket tariffs.

As Wu’s Congressional Hearing Looms, Experts See a High-Stakes Showdown

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu ’07  is set to testify before Congress regarding the city’s sanctuary policies, facing scrutiny from House Republicans who argue such policies endanger public safety. The hearing, likened to the intense questioning that led to former Harvard President Claudine Gay’s resignation, could impact Boston’s federal funding. While legal experts assert that sanctuary policies do not violate federal law, Republican lawmakers have threatened funding cuts, potentially affecting education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects. Wu has retained legal counsel to prepare, emphasizing that the city is on solid legal ground. The uncertainty over funding remains a key concern.

Summers Accuses Harvard Corporation, Garber of Inaction Against Antisemitism

Former Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers criticized the Harvard Corporation and President Alan M. Garber for their inadequate response to antisemitism on campus, calling the University's actions slow and ineffective. Summers expressed frustration over the delayed recommendations from Garber’s Presidential Task Force on Combating Antisemitism and condemned recent academic events and faculty statements as antisemitic. While he opposed the Trump administration’s threats to cut Harvard’s federal funding, he urged stronger action against antisemitism. His comments come amid increased federal scrutiny, including a DOJ task force investigation into antisemitism allegations at Harvard.

By William C. Mao and Veronica H. Paulus

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at Harvard voted to implement a non-attribution policy in classrooms and explicitly prohibit grading based on political beliefs in the Harvard College student handbook. The amendment, driven by concerns over self-censorship, emphasizes the primacy of academics and will take effect on July 1. Faculty also discussed potential legal risks, such as congressional subpoenas exposing classroom discussions. Harvard Students Walk Out of Class To Protest Time Caps for Academic Workers

More than 200 Harvard students and faculty members protested outside University Hall against time caps that limit non-tenure-track faculty positions, as part of the Harvard Academic Workers Union-United Auto Workers' ongoing contract negotiations. The union delivered a petition with nearly 1,400 signatures demanding an end to these employment limits, but Harvard has yet to respond. Faculty members and students spoke out against the policy, arguing that it forces out dedicated educators and harms academic programs. Despite Harvard's stance that such turnover is standard during union negotiations, affected faculty contracts are set to expire on June 30, prompting urgent calls for change.

Russian Dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza Calls Trump Admin’s Relationship With Ukraine ‘Absolutely Horrendous’

Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza harshly criticized the Trump administration's approach to Ukraine during a talk at Harvard’s Davis Center, calling it "absolutely horrendous" and stating he has lost faith in U.S. leadership on the issue. Kara-Murza, who was arrested and imprisoned in Russia for his opposition to Vladimir Putin, detailed his experiences in solitary confinement and compared his treatment to Soviet-era political repression. Released in a U.S.-negotiated prisoner exchange in 2024, he expressed optimism for Russia’s democratic future, citing growing anti-war sentiment despite government crackdowns.

Columns: Harvard Isn’t a Trade School. It’s a Liberal Arts Institution.

By Zoe Yu. Zoe Yu ’27, a Crimson Editorial editor, is a Government concentrator in Pforzheimer House.

Harvard student Zoe Yu critiques the growing prioritization of pre-professionalism over academics, arguing that students are treating the university as a networking hub rather than a place for intellectual growth. She highlights how many students disengage from meaningful classroom discussions out of fear of challenging viewpoints or risking lower grades. Yu warns that this academic apathy leads to conformity, undermining the liberal arts education that Harvard champions. She calls for a renewed commitment to learning for its own sake, emphasizing that true education is about thinking critically, questioning beliefs, and valuing intellectual curiosity over mere career preparation.

Editorials: Worried About Foreign Influence? Start With Trump, Not Harvard

The Crimson Editorial Board argues that congressional scrutiny of Harvard’s foreign funding is misplaced, especially given the financial challenges the University faces due to declining donations and potential federal funding cuts under the Trump administration. While acknowledging the importance of assessing donations for undue influence, the editorial contends that foreign contributions should not be rejected outright. Instead, it criticizes the hypocrisy of lawmakers who focus on Harvard while overlooking Donald Trump’s undisclosed foreign gifts during his presidency. The board calls for equal scrutiny of foreign influence in government, particularly in the White House.

Editorials Dissent: On Tyrannical Middle Eastern Regimes, the Editorial Board Wavers

The dissenting opinion argues that Harvard’s acceptance of foreign donations from repressive Middle Eastern regimes is both naive and morally indefensible. It criticizes the Crimson Editorial Board for dismissing concerns about foreign influence, highlighting donations from countries with poor human rights records like Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The piece also questions the potential impact of such funding on Harvard’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies, citing its alleged anti-Israel stance. Finally, the dissent calls out the Board’s hypocrisy in supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel while remaining lenient toward oppressive Islamist regimes.

Columns: Faculty Time Caps Hurt Harvard’s Students, Too

This column argues that Harvard’s time caps on non-tenure-track faculty harm not only instructors but also students by disrupting relationships, reducing teaching quality, and undermining educational consistency. The author highlights that many of Harvard’s best teachers—preceptors, lecturers, and mentors—are on limited contracts, forcing them to leave just as they gain experience and establish connections with students. Other universities, such as Michigan and Rutgers, have abandoned similar policies, and even some Harvard schools allow indefinite contract renewals. The piece calls for an end to time caps, asserting that students and faculty alike deserve better.

Flyby: Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve: Blocking Group Names

By Carly Y. ChenArezoo Ghazagh, and Sneha M. Yelamanchili

This humorous column playfully critiques Harvard students’ often uninspired choices for blocking group names while offering a series of witty, alternative suggestions. From pop culture references like Jenny from the Block and New Kids on the Block to Harvard-specific puns like Blochannalia (for Lowell House hopefuls) and Johann Sebastian Block (for musically inclined students), the piece suggests students could have done better. With a mix of satire and self-awareness, the writers lament missed opportunities and encourage future students to choose more creative names—or at least consult them before making any major decisions.

Sneha M. Yelamanchili

Worried About the Market? Here's How Warren Buffett, Ray Dalio, and Harvard University Protect Their Portfolios - Three asset allocation recipes that can keep your investments steady.

Harvard and Yale’s massive endowments operate with a mindset focused on long-term growth and risk diversification rather than a fixed investment formula. David Swensen, who managed Yale’s endowment, transformed it by shifting away from traditional stocks and bonds toward alternative assets like venture capital, real estate, and hedge funds. This strategy, known as the "endowment model," protects against major losses by investing in assets with low correlation, ensuring stability across economic cycles. The approach allows elite universities to sustain financial health while supporting institutional goals.
