Hualong-1, The World’s First Reactor, Has Been Running Safely and Stably For 1000 Days Continuously

On May14, Unit 5 of Fuqing Nuclear Power of China National Nuclear Corporation, the world’s first reactor of Hualong No.1, which is known as the “national business card”, achieved continuous safe and stable operation for 1,000 days, and continuously delivered clean electricity to the society over 37 billion kWh. This once again verified the safety and advancement of China’s independent third-generation nuclear power technology Hualong No.1, and contributed to the global clean energy development “Chinese Solutions”.

Hualong No.1 is a “national business card” and a national brand, which contains the ideal pursuit of self-reliance and self-improvement of the nuclear industry. Based on more than 30 years’ experience in scientific research, design, manufacture, construction and operation of nuclear power in China, it is a million-kilowatt advanced PWR nuclear power technology developed according to the latest safety requirements in the world. It is an innovative achievement of PWR nuclear power with completely independent intellectual property rights and the highest international safety standards.

Zhu Jingang, deputy director of Fuqing No.3 Nuclear Power Plant, said that the continuous safe and stable operation of the world’s first reactor of Hualong No.1 for 1000 days means that the leap of China’s nuclear power technology from “following” to “leading” has been transformed into sustainable operational capability. In the future, Hualong No.1 will provide greater support for building a new energy system and ensuring energy security, and contribute more to the global energy green and low-carbon transformation.

It is understood that the annual power generation of a single unit of Hualong No.1 reaches 10 billion kWh, which can meet the annual production and domestic electricity demand of millions of people in moderately developed countries, which is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 8.16 million tons per year. At the same time, the batch construction of Hualong No.1 has been steadily promoted, which has driven nearly 6000 enterprises in the upstream and downstream to form a complete industrial chain supply system.

At present, there are 41 Hualong No.1 units under construction and operation in the world, which has become the main reactor type of nuclear power construction at present. Fuqing Nuclear Power Units 5 and 6, as the Hualong No.1 demonstration project, are in good operation, and Unit 6 will have a continuous safe and stable operation for 1000 days on May 30.
