Introduction to Fufeng Museum

Overview

The Fufeng Museum is located within the Fufeng City God Temple, situated at No. 5 Dongdajie Street, Old Town of Fufeng County. Covering an area of 6,668 square meters, the museum was established in 1981 and officially opened to the public in 1987. The museum's collection exceeds 10,000 cultural relics, including 26 first-class items (or sets), 159 second-class items (or sets), and 832 third-class items (or sets). It boasts the highest number of precious cultural relics among county-level museums in Shaanxi Province, with particular renown for its collection of Western Zhou bronzeware, which enjoys a reputation both domestically and internationally.

In June 2009, the Fufeng Museum was assessed and officially designated as a National Third-Class Museum by the National Cultural Heritage Administration. In October 2009, it was included as one of the second batch of free-admission institutions by the five official departments of the state. In November 2017, the museum was recognized as a educational base for popularizing science by the Baoji Association for Science and Technology. In January 2018, it was established as a base for educating the youth of Baoji on patriotism and love for their hometowns by the Baoji Committee for the Wellbeing of the Next Generation and the Baoji Bureau of Civil Affairs. In August 2023, the museum was designated as an out-of-school practice education camp (base) for the Young Pioneers of Fufeng County, by the Fufeng County Committee of the Chinese Young Pioneers. In 2025, it was recognized as a "Moral Education Base" by the College of Foreign Languages, Baoji University of Arts and Sciences.

Environment

The Fufeng Museum enjoys a serene and elegant setting, making it an indispensable destination for domestic and international visitors seeking leisure and respite, historical exploration, cultural sightseeing, academic exchange and study tours.

The Fufeng City God Temple，which also houses the museum, was first erected in the third year of Hongwu (1370 CE) of the Ming dynasty, granting it a history of some 650 years. The entire complex is oriented along a north–south axis and is perched atop a rammed-earth terrace that rises 13 meters from south to north. Eighteen ancient structures dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties are arranged sequentially along this central axis: the Mountain Gate Hall, the Wooden Memorial Gate, and the Eight-Trigram Pavilion divide the compound into three courtyards within a traditional quadrangle layout. In form, these buildings retain the dignified characteristics of official architecture while incorporating vernacular construction techniques. Their elaborately carved beams, painted rafters, and upturned eaves convey a simple yet refined elegance. Both in the choice of construction methods and in the intricacy of their timber-frame structures, they display unique features that fully reflect the Chinese aesthetic ideal of solemnity and grace. As one of the most intact and grand ancient architectural ensembles in western Guanzhong region, the temple complex holds high scientific, historical, and artistic values.

On May 25, 2006, it was designated by the State Council as a Major National- Level Protected Historical and Cultural Site.

The Fufeng Museum boasts a diverse and distinctive collection of cultural relics, spanning multiple historical periods and encompassing various categories. It is particularly renowned for its Western Zhou bronze ware, and it also houses over 500 bronze mirrors from various historical periods. The museum’s permanent exhibitions include

“Ancient Pottery Treasures — Pottery Art Exhibition”This exhibition presents the ancient pottery relics unearthed in the Fufeng region, spanning the Neolithic period and the successive dynasties of Shang, Western Zhou, Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing. Over the course of millennia, our industrious and ingenious forebears, transforming clay into treasures, compose the resplendent saga of China’s ancient pottery culture with the language of clay and the artistry of fire.

This exhibition presents over seventy pieces of bronzeware of significant scholarly and artistic value, including ritual vessels, weapons, and chariot accessories.These pieces showcase Fufeng's glorious history and unique cultural identity as the cradle of Western Zhou culture and the "hometown of bronzeware".

"Mirroring History — Exhibition of Fine Ancient Bronze Mirrors"

This exhibition features 77 carefully selected bronze mirrors from a collection of over 500 pieces, offering a focused glimpse into the decorative artistry and historical evolution of bronze mirrors across successive dynasties. The display reveals the stylistic characteristics of bronze mirrors across different historical periods, as well as the evolving aesthetic values of the people over time.

This exhibition adopts a dual-row display layout: large-scale stone sculptures and carved images are arranged in the rear row, while smaller, more delicate pieces are positioned in the front. Together, the display offers a comprehensive view of the aesthetic sensibilities, sculptural styles, techniques, and artistry of the ancient people.

Significant Cultural Relics

Representative items in the museum’s collection include the Hu Gui, Dong Fang Ding, Bronze Mirror Featuring a Nautical Theme, Zhongyan Paper, Bo You, Diaosheng Zun, Dong Gui, Crawling Loong Ornament, the Epitaph of Wang Lun, and the Imperial Edict from the Ming Dynasty. Many of these valuable artifacts have been featured in national touring exhibitions as well as international displays.

Key Highlight of the collections - The Hu Gui from the Western Zhou dynasty

The largest known Gui from the Shang and Zhou periods still in existence, honored as the “King of Gui.” As it was cast by King Li of Zhou himself, it is also known as the “Royal Gui”.

So far the Gui with the most inscriptions, the Dong Gui dates to the reign of King Mu of the Western Zhou dynasty. It records a significant military victory and commemorates the moment of glory for a general named Dong.

As a “military diary” from the reign of King Mu of the Western Zhou dynasty, it records the moment before battle when the king ordered General Dong to lead troops to resist the enemy.

Featured Programs and Public Education Activities

The museum has steadily advanced its public education initiatives. In recent years, guided by a commitment to uncovering the cultural value of its collections and promoting the region’s profound historical heritage, the Fufeng Museum has continuously refined its outreach strategies and diversified its platforms for communication. A wide array of activities has been actively implemented, including the "Mobile Museum into Six Venues" initiative, the themed series “Our Traditional Festivals,” and promotional events for "International Museum Day" on May 18. On average, the museum organizes 63 cultural and educational programs annually, benefiting tens of thousands of participants and further enhancing its social influence.

Joint Exhibitions and Cultural Contributions

The museum actively engages in collaborative exhibitions. In partnership with the Baoji Bronze Ware Museum, we co-organized the permanent exhibition "Bronze Casting Civilization" , and jointly launched the exhibition "Tranquil Brilliance" with the Famen Temple Museum. These efforts reflect Fufeng's strong contribution to the integrated development of culture and tourism in the Baoji region. The museum has also loaned a significant number of artifacts for co-curated temporary exhibitions with renowned institutions, including National Library of China, Beijing Minsheng Art Museum, Linhai Museum, China Port Museum in Ningbo, and Nanyue King Museum. Notable exhibitions include

Curated Integrity Education Programs

The Fufeng Museum has systematically organized its collection of integrity-themed cultural resources, including the Oath of Self-Admonition at the Time of the New and Full Moon, the Epitaphs of Sun Dai, the Epitaphs of Wang Lun, the fragmentary stele inscribed with “Let the People Live and Thrive in Peace,” and a gray pottery saving pot from the Song Dynasty. Based on these resources, the museum has developed a comprehensive “Six-in-One” integrity education program. The structured activitis include: viewing a themed exhibition panel, attending an expert-led tour, reciting the oath, watching an educational video, participating in a seminar, and reviewing key Party discipline regulations. Numerous organizations from both within and outside the county have visited the museum to hold themed Party Day events. Through these programs, Party members and government officials gain not only a deeper understanding of their local cultural heritage, but also a profound experience of traditional values and integrity culture.

Establishment of the Volunteer Team

In July 2024, the Fufeng Museum established its official volunteer team, guided by the spirit of "inheriting culture, serving society, promoting mutual assistance, and progressing together." The team is committed to public cultural service in areas such as interpretation, visitor guidance and assistance, and community outreach. At present, the team has 65 registered volunteers and runs five active programs, including the “Red Scarf Volunteer Post” and the “University Student Internship Station.” To date, the team has organized more than 50 volunteer activities.

Full Operation of the "Friends of the Museum" Initiative

Two distinctive “Friends of the Museum” teams have been successfully established and put into full operation. In May 2024, the museum formed a team of social practice instructors, consisting of 15 in-service teachers with specialized expertise. These educators contribute ideas and guidance to the museum’s public education programs, significantly enhancing the quality and effectiveness of its services. In June 2024, a team of Fufeng cultural heritage enthusiasts was established. Since its inception, the team has organized 7 thematic lectures, offering in-depth exploration of the stories behind Fufeng's historical artifacts.

New Museum Construction

In 2022, the Fufeng County Government invested a total of 195 million RMB to build the Fufeng Cultural and Arts Center on the east side of Meiyang Avenue in the new district. Among the various projects, the new museum is the largest in scale, with a total construction area of 7,542 square meters, comprising two floors and a mezzanine. The architectural design integrates elements of Zhou ritual culture and bronzeware art, and its exterior facade is adorned with decorative motifs of bronzeware phoenix patterns, symbolizing the county’s identity as the “Land of Bronzeware” and its profound cultural connotations.

The new Fufeng Museum is designed as a comprehensive cultural venue, integrating multiple functions such as artifact exhibition, collection and preservation, educational research, and leisure services. The exhibition space is divided into two main sections: permanent exhibition and special exhibition.

The permanent exhibition, titled “Assisting the Capital and Cultivating Civilization: An Exhibition on the History and Culture of Fufeng”, is organized into five sections:

Settling by the River,Sacred city of the King,Supporting the Imperial Capital,A Strategic Town on the Silk Road, andEnduring Cultural Lineage. Through a rich variety of artifacts—spanning different historical periods, materials, and categories—this exhibition vividly presents the historical development and cultural landscape of the Fufeng region from ancient times to the modern era.

The special exhibition, titled “Refined Craftsmanship: Bronze Mirrors Unearthed in Fufeng through the Ages”, features a selection of bronze mirrors from the museum’s collection, supplemented by interpretive panels. It explores the craftsmanship, ideological trends, economic context, and social customs reflected in bronze mirrors from various dynasties.

The main structure of the new museum has been completed, and exhibition installations are currently underway.
