Harvard President Responds to Secretary of Education

In a public letter to Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, Harvard President Alan Garber firmly rejected federal overreach while emphasizing Harvard’s compliance with the law and openness to dialogue. Garber condemned the suspension of federal grants as ideologically driven retaliation, not rooted in legal violations, and defended Harvard’s efforts to combat antisemitism, foster intellectual diversity, and ensure merit-based admissions and hiring. He cited reforms such as appointing new leadership, revising disciplinary policies, and investing in Jewish studies. While denying claims of partisanship or preferential treatment for international students, Garber reaffirmed Harvard’s core commitment to academic freedom, inclusion, and nonpartisanship, signaling hope for a renewed partnership with the federal government.

Garber Condemns Federal Grant Disqualification but Says Harvard Shares ‘Common Ground’ With McMahon

In a measured rebuttal to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Harvard President Alan Garber defended the university’s integrity and constitutional autonomy in the face of federal threats to withhold $2.2 billion in grants. Garber denounced the Trump administration’s actions as “unfounded retaliation” and “overreach”, yet acknowledged “common ground” on goals like fighting antisemitism, supporting free speech, and fostering viewpoint diversity. He asserted that Harvard complies with the 2023 Supreme Court affirmative action ruling, uses merit-based admissions and hiring, and emphasized the value of international students. Garber portrayed recent reforms, including centralized discipline and expanded Jewish studies, as internal initiatives, not political concessions.

EEOC Launches Investigation Into Harvard’s Hiring Practices, Alleging Title VII Violations

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has launched an investigation into Harvard University over alleged Title VII violations, accusing the institution of engaging in discriminatory hiring practices since 2018. The charge, filed by EEOC acting chair Andrea R. Lucas, cites Harvard's increased hiring of women, non-binary people, and people of color, while tenure-track white male hires have declined. The investigation extends to Harvard affiliates such as Dana-Farber, Brigham and Women’s, and Mass General, and targets fellowship and training programs that allegedly prioritize applicants of color, including the Du Bois Scholars Program and Four Directions Summer Research Program. This probe follows the Trump administration’s $2.2 billion federal funding cut, with Harvard vowing to defend its merit-based hiring and legal compliance.

HMC Backs Out of Big Tech, Increases Stakes in Microsoft and Booking at Beginning of 2025

In Q1 2025, the Harvard Management Company (HMC) made a major shift in its public equities portfolio, exiting positions in Apple, Amazon, Tesla, AMD, and TSMC, and reducing stakes in Meta, Nvidia, and Broadcom. HMC increased its holdings in Microsoft significantly and doubled its stake in Booking Holdings, despite student protests over Booking’s ties to Israeli settlements. HMC also added new positions in Uber, Rubrik, and Maze Therapeutics. As of March 31, HMC’s directly held U.S. equities were valued at $1.13 billion, its lowest total since Q3 2023, and represent a portion of Harvard’s $53.2 billion endowment.

NYTimes: Harvard Leaders See Only Bad Outcomes Ahead as They Battle Trump

As Harvard University battles the Trump administration over the loss of federal grants and intrusive demands, its leaders privately acknowledge that no outcome is without cost. Even a legal victory may not restore the university’s $687 million in annual federal research funding, and could force deep structural changes. Officials fear that without federal support, Harvard may shrink its research enterprise, impose layoffs, and become more like a teaching-focused liberal arts college. Despite its $53 billion endowment, much of it is restricted, and Harvard has already issued $750 million in bonds to remain afloat. Internal discussions weigh whether to continue litigation or negotiate, though concerns about credibility, donor backlash, and the unreliability of a Trump deal persist. Legal experts warn that even if Harvard wins in court, the administration may still manipulate grant processes or escalate investigations. The crisis, leaders say, could reshape Harvard’s identity and influence for years to come.

NYTimes Opinion: The Science I Would Be Doing if I Weren’t in ICE Detention

Kseniia Petrova, a Russian scientist at Harvard Medical School, has been detained by ICE since February 2025 after returning from France with undeclared frog embryos, leading to visa revocation. Petrova, a specialist in bioinformatics, works with NoRI — a unique microscope capable of detecting molecular structures like lipids without dyes, enabling breakthroughs in aging, Alzheimer’s, and cancer research. Her detention has halted Harvard’s “atlas of aging” project, which she helped lead. Facing possible deportation to Russia, where she fears political persecution, Petrova awaits a federal court hearing this week that could determine her release.
