Harvard’s former chemistry chair takes new position at Chinese university

Charles Lieber, former Harvard chemistry chair and nanoscience pioneer, who was convicted in 2021 for concealing Chinese funding, has taken a full-time faculty position at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School. Despite facing up to 26 years in prison, he avoided incarceration and retired from Harvard in 2023. Now named a chair professor, Lieber aims to help build a global scientific hub in Shenzhen. His move highlights growing tensions in U.S. academia over foreign funding scrutiny, with some scientists feeling constrained by strict disclosure policies and grant uncertainty.

Funding today, entrepreneurship tomorrow. Or not.

Federal funding cuts to Harvard research—especially in science and medicine—threaten not only university labs but also the broader U.S. innovation ecosystem, says HBS lecturer Jeffrey Bussgang. The $2 billion freeze already imposed and $9 billion under review could slash future startup creation, weaken economic growth, and stunt entrepreneurial output that often stems from faculty labs and student ventures. Though the full impact may take 1–3 years to unfold, Bussgang warns the funding disruption could have long-term ripple effects on biomedical and tech commercialization nationwide.

Trump Doubles Down on Threat to End Harvard’s Tax-Exempt Status

Donald Trump doubled down on his threat to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status, posting on Truth Social that the University would “get what they deserve.” The Trump administration's standoff with Harvard escalated after the University rejected federal demands and sued over the freeze of $2.2 billion in federal funding. While federal law bars the president from directing the IRS, the post signals Trump’s intent to politicize tax enforcement over claims Harvard promotes “ideological” agendas. Harvard warned that revoking its tax-exempt status would harm financial aid and research, calling the move legally baseless and unprecedented.

Fifteen Minutes : The Weight of Lightweight Rowing

Harvard's lightweight rowing program, while offering a competitive space for smaller athletes, has also exposed students to disordered eating, weight-cutting pressures, and long-term mental health challenges. Though some rowers reported positive experiences and healthy guidance from team dietitians and psychologists, many others—like Jacqueline Epstein and Sean Hayes—described how striving to stay under strict weight limits led to eating disorders, obsessive habits, and physical danger. Despite efforts by Harvard Athletics to improve weight management support, the culture of "making weight" often persists informally, with mixed oversight. As lightweight rowing fades from high school and Olympic stages, Harvard remains one of the few colleges sustaining the sport—raising ongoing questions about its risks, culture, and cost to student wellbeing.

It is an open secret that lightweight rowing can promote disordered eating. But the category persists as a collegiate sport, and Harvard is one of the few schools that offers it.

Harvard’s President Is Fighting Trump. He Also Agrees With Him.

Harvard President Alan Garber, while publicly opposing Trump’s punitive threats to strip the university’s federal funding and tax-exempt status, is also quietly advancing reforms that align with conservative critiques of elite academia. He has acknowledged a “campus culture problem”, particularly involving antisemitism and ideological intolerance, and has made major policy shifts, including scaling back diversity-related programs and emphasizing individual over racial identity. While defending academic freedom through a lawsuit against the administration, Garber seeks to balance reform and resistance, aiming to restore public trust in higher education amid growing national scrutiny.

Alan Garber, Harvard’s president for nearly a year and a half, has argued the university has a problem with antisemitism on campus.

Harvard Signals It Will Resist Trump’s Efforts to Revoke Tax-Exempt Status

Harvard signaled it will resist Trump’s renewed threat to revoke its tax-exempt status, calling the move legally baseless and dangerous to its educational mission. Trump posted on Truth Social that Harvard would lose its status, escalating a broader conflict over elite universities, but under federal law, the president cannot direct the IRS to take such actions. The university warned that revoking its status would harm financial aid, research, and innovation. The dispute follows Harvard’s recent lawsuit over frozen federal funds, intensifying the politicization of tax enforcement in higher education.
