From Lab to Startup: Harvard’s Office of Technology Development Paves the Way for Research Commercialization

Harvard’s Office of Technology Development (OTD) has played a pivotal role in turning university research into real-world impact, helping launch 96 startups and generating nearly $500 million in commercialization revenue over the past five years. Acting as a “one-stop shop” for researchers, OTD offers support with intellectual property licensing, investor outreach, and business development. From biomedical innovations to energy technologies, the office provides crucial infrastructure and funding access — including accelerators and corporate partnerships — to bridge the gap from lab to startup, fulfilling Harvard’s mission to apply knowledge for societal benefit.

Harvard Sends International Students’ Info to DHS, Does Not Specify What Records Were Shared

Harvard shared information with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in response to an April 16 demand for international students’ disciplinary records, including data related to protest participation and criminal activity, though the extent of compliance remains unclear. Executive Vice President Meredith L. Weenick stated the disclosure was made to fulfill legal obligations under Title 8 of the Code of Federal Regulations, while reaffirming Harvard’s commitment to remaining in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). The DHS had threatened to revoke Harvard’s SEVP certification, prompting campus backlash and calls to sue DHS, though Harvard’s ongoing federal lawsuit over $2.2 billion in funding cuts does not name DHS as a defendant.

House Republicans Threaten Subpoena After Harvard Misses Deadline To Submit Documents in Antitrust Probe

House Republicans are preparing to subpoena Harvard after the University allegedly missed an April 22 deadline to provide documents for an antitrust investigation into Ivy League tuition collusion, though Harvard claims it was granted an extension until the week of May 19. The House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), is probing potential anti-competitive financial aid practices following the 2022 expiration of a legal exemption. This is part of a broader campaign targeting Harvard, including threats to revoke its tax-exempt status and federal funding.

More Than 80 Faculty Pledge 10 Percent of Pay To Support Harvard’s Fight Against Trump

More than 80 Harvard faculty have pledged to donate 10% of their salaries for up to a year, collectively over $2 million, to support the University’s stand against the Trump administration’s federal funding freeze and demands threatening academic freedom. The pledge, detailed in a letter to President Alan Garber, reflects faculty solidarity amid a $3.2 billion funding threat, with donations aimed at backing affected students, staff, and academic programs. Professors acknowledged the contributions are symbolic but crucial in defending constitutional rights and resisting what one called a “Stalinist” government overreach.

Columns: Stop Recognizing Student Organizations

In this column, Allison P. Farrell argues that Harvard should abolish official student organization recognition, asserting it often serves as a tool to suppress dissent rather than uphold community standards. Citing recent disciplinary actions against groups like the Palestine Solidarity Committee and AFRO, Farrell calls for a system that allows students to freely organize and use campus spaces without bureaucratic gatekeeping. She emphasizes that individual accountability, not blanket sanctions, should be the standard, especially as recognition requirements disproportionately hinder activist groups responding to emerging issues.

Columns: Is Going to Class Still Worth It?

In her column, Sandhya Kumar questions whether attending class at Harvard is still worthwhile, highlighting how students increasingly weigh opportunity costs against the steep tuition value per hour (~$117.81). While recognizing faculty effort, she argues that disengagement stems not from apathy, but from lectures lacking interactive or practical value. To improve attendance, Kumar calls for more discussion-based and collaborative learning, especially in STEM and seminars, rather than enforcing mandatory attendance policies that fail to inspire true academic curiosity.

Sedentary work may contribute to insomnia

A new study in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology finds that sedentary work significantly increases the risk of insomnia, with symptoms like difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, and daytime fatigue persisting over a 10-year period. Researchers tracked nearly 1,300 individuals and found that sedentary workers were 37% more likely to develop poor sleep patterns than those with active jobs. The study suggests that job design can lead to long-term sleep disruptions, but incorporating physical activity during the workday may help prevent or reduce these chronic issues.
